What does an engineering job in renewable energy look like?

It means being a true consultant to the client. Like most days, you start with an expected list of to-dos on a project that can quickly turn into an unexpected change or shift in schedule. Projects are fast paced, with little guidance. You must be able to pivot and rely on your team to make good decisions for the success of the project.

Why did you choose renewable energy?

For me it was a way to use my education and apply it to a creative solution. Renewable projects require you to think big picture and outside the box. Often, there are no standards or go-bys. Each project is unique in itself. I was lucky enough early in my career to get exposed to not only engineering, but the construction side as well. When you’re able to see a project mature from a conceptual design to being energized in the field, it is truly rewarding.

What would you say to kids wanting to make engineering/renewable energy their future?

I’d say go for it! The renewable industry offers so many different career paths. If you are a young student who wants to learn more, I suggest going to career fairs, researching job postings, and seeing which one excites you the most.
