Mesa provided multi discipline engineering and design services to support a new 60 foot high experimental beamline facility to house technically specialized equipment with a 20-foot-deep basement adjacent to several existing buildings for a government client. The facility and equipment were designed specifically to match the equipment provided by the client to fit in a very tight space, while still allowing for a nonmagnetic exclusion zone for the beam line rays to work properly. The Mesa Team used Plant 3D to ensure the design of the building and equipment would fit within the constricted space and to enhance clash detection determinations. The foundation was designed on 70-foot-deep piles with minimal settlement tolerances as some large sensitive equipment had no tolerance for settlement or vibration. Existing underground utilities had to be verified and modified to accommodate the building addition. Various innovative materials were specified and designed to meet the nonmagnetic stipulations. This project required extensive collaboration with scientists, researchers, construction managers, vendors, and the owner’s engineering representatives.
